City of Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area roughly follows the contours of Amsterdam’s daily urban system – the area which a fixed group of around 2.3 million residents covers in their daily commute, and use for shopping, recreation and amenities. Business districts, such as Schiphol and the Port of Amsterdam, also have strong connections to this regional city. The smallest change at Schiphol for example, has immediate ramifications for other parts of the Amsterdam Area, including space for housing and tourist streams.

D-Flight is the public-private company created by ENAV - the Italian Air Navigation service provider - in November 2018 to develop the U-space platform for the provision of services for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), commonly called "drones". The Company is controlled by ENAV, with a 60% stake, with the remainder of the share capital held by a group of leading Italian technological partners.

The U-space concept offers a framework for the integration of drones, which by design, relies on high levels of automation and connectivity. U-space will support the safe and efficient management of drone operations and act as the necessary interface between manned Air Traffic Management (ATM) and UAS Traffic Management (UTM).

Following the signing of the agreement with the ENAC regulator, ENAV/D-Flight undertook to develop and implement a specific ATM system for UAVs and to define the methods of service delivery through the development of a platform that - integrating multiple articulated technologies - guarantees the safe handling of remotely piloted aircraft.

D-Flight has already started implementation, anticipating EU U-space Blueprint and providing full national compliance to EASA Regulation on Open category.

D-Flight is the Italian industry's response to the challenge launched by the European Union. The U-space platform - developed by D-Flight - will allow the timely development and deployment of U-space, in order to safely and seamlessly integrate complex drones’ operations within the civil aviation airspace.
